Protests Held in Pakistan’s KP Against Desecration of Quran in Sweden

People from different walks of life on Tuesday took to the streets in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa protesting against the burning of the Holy Quran in Sweden.

Activists of various political parties and civil society organizations gathered outside Peshawar Press Club and set the Swedish flag on fire.

While condemning the desecration of the Holy Quran and terming it intolerable, the protestors demanded the Pakistani government end diplomatic relations with Sweden.

A similar rally was taken out by Pakistan Rah-i-Haq Party from Landi Arbab to Peshawar Press Club. The activists of Ehsas Welfare Organization also staged a demonstration and condemned Quran burning in Sweden which took place outside Stockholm’s main mosque.

Different political parties, members of the business community and civil society groups held rallies in Swat, Lower Dir, Bajaur and other districts of the province to condemn the incident.

Following the burning of the Quran in Stockholm last week, the Swedish government on Sunday, July 2, in a statement condemned the incident and described it as an “Islamophobic act”.

“We condemn the Quran burning in Stockholm in the strongest terms, and this hateful act does not represent the views of the Swedish government,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) urged member states to “take unified and collective measures to prevent the recurrence of incidents of desecration of copies of the Quran”, according to a statement released after the extraordinary meeting.
