ESPN apologises for kneeling joke

Dan Le Batard issued an apology for an ill-advised NBA poll.

The ESPN radio host’s show, “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz,” ran a poll on Twitter poking fun at Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Isaac, who tore his ACL on Monday.

Isaac was the first player in the NBA bubble not to kneel during the national anthem, and also did not wear the “Black Lives Matter” warm-up T-shirt donned by the rest of his teammates.

“Is it funny the guy who refused to kneel immediately blew out his knee?” the poll asked.

Le Batard said multiple times on the show that he did not think it was funny, but the show’s official Twitter account still posted the poll.

“We apologise for this poll question,” the show’s Twitter account posted. “I said on the front and back end of the on-air conversation that I didn’t think it was funny. Regardless of the context, we missed the mark. We took the tweet down when we realised our mistake in how we posed the question to the audience. Dan”

The tweet poll was eventually deleted.

Isaac said that he felt kneeling or wearing a “Black Lives Matter” warm-up does not go “hand-in-hand with supporting Black lives.”

“I don’t think kneeling or putting on a T-shirt for me personally is the answer,” Isaac said. “Black lives are supported through the gospel, we all have things that we all do wrong. Whose wrong is worse? We all fall short of God’s glory.”

After suffering what was thought at the time to be a season-ending knee injury in January, the COVID-19 break allowed Isaac to return to action in the bubble. He fell to the floor during the fourth quarter of the team’s 132-116 win over the Kings while driving to the rim. He had to be taken off the court in a wheelchair.

Isaac was averaging 11.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks before the injury.
