Real Footy podcast: 'I think they're in no man's land'

In recent times, the Hawks have chosen to trade for talent and add to what they have, rather than go to the draft.

But that seems to have left the club in stasis, neither going forward nor bottoming out.

This week on the Real Footy podcast, Michael Gleeson, Caroline Wilson and Jake Niall discuss the Hawks and whether they need to rebuild or not – and whether the decision has to be binary. Is Alastair Clarkson the man to take them forward? Did the Hawks give up too much to bring in certain players? And what are the on-field problems causing the most concern?

The panel also looks at the awful football played by Richmond and Sydney on Sunday, and the war of words that followed. Do clubs have a responsibility to put on a good show, now more than ever?

Also this week, Izak Rankine became the latest Sun to catch the eye and despite a loss against Melbourne, Gold Coast fans should not be disappointed with their team, which is full of upside. But the Dees have plenty to be happy about too. Christian Petracca is becoming the player he showed promise of being and their stars are performing well. Were the Dees too hard on themselves after last week's loss to Richmond? Or is it more positive that they were right but improved where they needed to?

Plus, was Brett Ratten too harsh on his own players after Saturday's loss to Fremantle? What is different about Essendon's good run of form this time? Is it time to put the Blues back in prime time, given the footy they're playing at the moment? And should Adelaide follow their own ruckman's public relations lead?
