Why it's time to undergo an essential face skin check

Road Test

With holiday sunshine in mind, I visit a dermatologist for my six-monthly skin examination.

The lowdown Growing up in the 1970s – before we became fully aware of the risks of exposure – has left me vulnerable to the consequences of sun damage. And the fact that I have had two basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) successfully excised means that I now have a date with my dermatologist, Dr Chris Kearney, every six months. Currently he is treating actinic keratosis, a patch of dry skin, on my lip line and the side of my nose using a prescription-only cream called Efudix. I tackle these spots at home with delicate application of the cream twice a day for two weeks.

Pain factor The somewhat unsightly red patchiness that follows is a sure sign the cream is working.

Downtime Half an hour for the consultation, followed by two weeks for the treatment.

Results After some peeling, my skin looks clear again.

Where to get it Consult your GP for a referral to a dermatologist.

At home Always wear an SPF 50+ sunscreen on your face, décolletage and the back of your hands, no matter what the weather. And, of course, apply sun protection all over when exposing your body to the sun. Try La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50+ Invisible Fluid (priceline.com.au, $30).

Trend: tinted skin finishes

As the weather warms, going for a lighter base covering is a smart option. These three are great finds, with Trinny’s clever tinted serum a particular winner as it also boosts antioxidant levels to help de-stress skin. Wear it over your favourite SPF 50+.

How do I choose the right perfume?
First try the fragrance on a blotter, which should be available at perfume counters. Allow it to dry to let the top notes settle and the heart and base notes emerge (if you are trying a few, this will help eliminate the non-starters). Then try the fragrance you like best on your skin to get a true indication
of how the scent will smell on you
