No sewage flowing into swamp, says BWA

The Barbados Water Authority (BWA) has dismissed as “totally untrue”, claims by Democratic Labour Party (DLP) president Dr Ronnie Yearwood that sewage is “flowing into the swamps” in this country.

He made the charge during a political meeting on Sunday night, as he accused the current government of not doing much to fix issues it found when it came to power in 2018.

However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, the BWA said that since early 2019, all sewage from the South Coast has been tested, screened at the South Coast Sewage Plant and safely pumped safely to the sewage outfall.

“In early 2019, teams from the Ministry of Health and the BWA launched a programme to restore the wetlands of the Graeme Hall swamp, including the Nature Sanctuary. This work included one year of bi-weekly water quality testing by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

“The Ministry of Transport Works and Water Resources currently maintains the Graeme Hall swamp by regularly removing silt and the water lilies supporting the wetlands ecosystem. Therefore, any reference to sewage currently flowing into the Graeme Hall Swamp is totally untrue,” the BWA statement said.
