PM’s potential candidacy for UN chief emerges as global talking point

There is mounting speculation internationally about the possibility of Prime Minister Mia Mottley running for the position of United Nations Secretary-General when it comes due in 2027.

While the Prime Minister’s Office has stoutly refrained from commenting on any potential candidacy, diplomats who spoke to Barbados TODAY supported a CNN analytical piece published on Friday that the Barbadian leader is a strong contender – at least among the world’s developing countries and activists – for the prestigious role.

One UN watcher well placed to comment on the process confirmed to Barbados TODAY that the entire CARICOM diplomatic corps at UN headquarters would be in solid support, although that did not necessarily reflect their countries’ official position.

When asked whether there was any opposition among Caribbean representatives to Mottley running for the UN’s top job when the time comes, the official said: “None. They’re all fans.”

The next UN Secretary-General is set to assume office in January 2027.

As reported by CNN, when asked last week if she would run for the position, Mottley gave a thumbs up, smiled, and walked away.

Said one UN diplomat to CNN: “I would jump up and down with excitement if she did.”

Ever since bursting onto the international stage with her speech to the United Nations General Assembly delivered almost entirely off the cuff after taking office in May 2018, Mottley has steadily earned international recognition. (BT)
