Allegation of extortion: BCL’s Patuakhali Science and Technology University president suspended

Chhatra League (BCL) suspended its Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) unit president Arafat Islam Sagar following an allegation of extorting a construction firm project manager.

A press release, signed by Meftahul Islam Pantho office secretary of the BCL, was issued today.

According to the release, Arafat was suspended due to his alleged involvement in activities that undermined the dignity of BCL and that are against its discipline.

Also, he was asked to submit a reply to the BCL office secretary in the next 15 days as to why permanent action will not be taken against him.

Contacted, Arafat said, "I have received the press release. The purpose of those who have plotted against me would not succeed."

On Wednesday, Enamul Haque, project manager of Amir Engineering Corporation which is the construction firm of Sheikh Russell Hall and Sheikh Hasina Hall at the PSTU, held a press conference and filed a written complaint with Dumki Police Station seeking security.

He also submitted a copy of the complaint to the university's vice-chancellor the same day.

In the complaint, he mentioned that the BCL's PSTU unit president Arafat and his followers recently took Tk 3.50 lakh as extortion from him. Now, they have been demanding more money from him. They have been threatening to stop the construction work at the halls, if he does not pay the extortion, he said in the complaint.

Dumki Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Abdul Hannan said, "I have already received the complaint. Legal action will be taken once the investigation is done.

PSTU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Swadesh Chandra Samanto said that he will inform the matter to the disciplinary committee of the university, and after that necessary action will be taken.
