Family seeks govt's permission to take Khaleda abroad for treatment

Family members of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia have applied to the home ministry seeking permission to take her abroad for better treatment.

Party sources said her brother Shamim Iskandar applied to the home ministry on September 25 seeking her permanent bail in graft cases and praying the government allows them to take the former prime minister abroad for treatment.

Claiming Khaleda's condition to be critical, BNP leaders have been demanding that the 78-year-old be sent abroad immediately for treatment.

The BNP chief is now undergoing treatment at the capital's Evercare Hospital.

The government freed Khaleda on March 25 last year after suspending her jail sentence for six months.

Later, the suspension of her jail sentence was extended twice and the government issued separate notifications to this effect. The notification said Khaleda will receive treatment at home and she cannot go abroad during this period.
