HSC examinee killed over land dispute in Dinajpur

An HSC examinee was killed yesterday in a clash over land dispute with their neighbours in Dinajpur's Birganj.

The deceased was identified as Ratna Akter, 20, daughter of Akhter Hossain, of Distapara village under Bhognagar union of the upazila. She was an HSC examinee from Birganj Women's College.

Police have arrested one Rubel, 25, in this connection, our Dinajpur correspondent reports quoting Rezakul Islam, sub-inspector of Birganj Police Station.

"We have been fighting a case with Rokeya Khatun, wife of our neighbour Ruhul Amin, over a piece of land for a long time. This afternoon, Rokeya Khatun's men came to the spot with the intention of constructing a house on the disputed land. When we resisted, they attacked us with country-made weapons. At least five of us, including Ratna Akter, were injured," said the deceased's mother, Rasheda Khatun.

The accused, Rokeya Khatun has been absconding since the incident, police said. None of them could be contacted for a comment.

At least 10 people from both sides of the clash were injured in the incident. They were taken to the Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared that Ratna was brought dead, he said.

A case is being filed in this connection, said SI Rezakul.
