Current greats Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have posted emotional tributes to 'friend' Diego Maradona on social media after the footballing legend passed away following cardiac arrest today.
Messi wanted to keep all his favourite moments with Diego in his heart while Ronaldo said goodbye to a friend and unparalleled magician.
The Argentine suffered a heart attack in his home country, days after leaving hospital following an emergency surgery.
He was regarded as one of the best footballers in the world, winning the 1986 World Cup with Argentina while scoring 312 club goals in nearly 600 appearances.
Tributes from the icon poured in from all over the world and Messi and Ronaldo were no different.
Messi, who followed Maradona's footsteps by moving to Barcelona and scoring more than 650 goals for the Spanish side, shared his tribute on Instagram.
Sharing a snap with his former Argentina manager, the six-time Ballon d'Or winner said: "A very sad day for all Argentines and for football. He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal.
"I keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I wanted to take the opportunity to send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP."
And Ronaldo, who has won five Ballon d'Ors and 21 major titles for club and country, shared his own message on Twitter.
"Today I say goodbye to a friend and the world says goodbye to an eternal genius. One of the best ever. An unparalleled magician. He leaves too soon, but leaves a legacy without limits and a void that will never be filled. Rest in peace, ace. You will never be forgotten."
