Smart NID cards for expats: EC officials to travel 40 countries; budget TK 100cr

Election Commission officials will travel to 40 countries to collect information on expatriates for providing smart NID cards.

Tk 100 crore has been allocated for this purpose, Abul Kalam Azad, a member of the Planning Commission, said after a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) at NEC conference room in Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar today.

The ECNEC meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved the Election Commission Secretariat's "Identification System for Enhancing Access to Services (IDEA) (Phase-II)" project.

Under the IDEA project, smart NID cards will be provided to expatriates, said Abul Kalam Azad.

Election Commission officials will return after collecting information on expatriates. Later, the Bangladesh embassies will deliver the NID cards to their addresses in the respective countries, he said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joined the meeting through video conference from Gono Bhaban.
