Advocating for animals

Dear Editor,

It is disheartening to witness the abandonment of animals, particularly dogs, on a daily basis.

It appears that people are no longer concerned or maybe they never were.

As a society, our creator has placed animals among us to care for them, and it is our responsibility to do so.

Animals cannot speak, buy food or water, or express when they are sick. Therefore, it is our duty to take care of them.

Earlier today, I came across four small puppies on the street and provided them with food and water.

It was heartwarming to see their gratitude. However, I noticed that they needed proper vaccinations and medication to ensure their healthy development.

As such, I contacted the Bahamas Humane Society to seek guidance. Unfortunately, they advised me to make an appointment with a veterinarian, which was not practical given that the puppies were homeless.

However, I acknowledge that the humane society is doing its best with the limited resources available to them.

Nonetheless, I believe that our country needs to establish a better facility for abandoned animals. The current one is functioning, but it’s too small, given that we are in the 21st century and should be taking better care of our animals.

I currently have five dogs at home, including three that I rescued from the streets to live with my family.

While I wish I could take in all the homeless animals, it’s not feasible for me to do so alone. That’s why it’s crucial for all of us to lend a helping hand in caring for these animals.

On this small island of New Providence, we have numerous veterinarians who must have come across many abandoned animals, especially dogs.

My wish is that all veterinarians dedicate one day each week to conduct wellness checks on these deserted dogs on the streets.

These creatures are faithful and beautiful and deserve to be sheltered, fed, and vaccinated against diseases.

Although I am not familiar with the logistics involved in veterinarian volunteer work, I know that these loving animals need our protection from cruelty and neglect.

We should be kind to these animals, and they deserve to live without the worry of where their next meal will come from. Let’s help these animals.
