A 38-year-old man accused of molesting his 11-year-old niece last month was on Friday denied bail.

Prosecutors say the man, whose name has been withheld to conceal the alleged victim’s identity, molested the minor on January 30.

He was not required to enter a plea to the incest charge when he made his first court appearance before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans.

The accused was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services since the magistrate lacks the jurisdiction to consider bail for the charge.

He is scheduled to return to court on May 17 to receive a voluntary bill of indictment.

The accused can apply to the Supreme Court, so he can be released on bail in the interim.
