A man whose arrest sparked an internal investigation into the behavior of the arresting officers was on Friday charged with stealing, receiving and causing damage.

Ronald Telfort, 40, of Toote Shop Corner, pleaded not guilty to the charges at his arraignment before Magistrate Kendra Kelly.

He was granted $4,000 bail and is scheduled to return to court on April 11 for the start of his trial.

Telfort is accused of stealing a 2001 Honda CR-V from a home on Moss Road. Police officers allegedly encountered the stolen vehicle while on patrol, resulting in a high-speed chase. Telfort is accused of causing $1,115 in damage to the vehicle during the pursuit.

A cell phone video of police officers stomping and slamming Telfort on the ground went viral on social media.

Alphonso Lewis represents Telfort and Sergeant 260 Vernon Pyfrom is the prosecutor.
