B.D.F. Soldier Accidentally Killed During Hunting Trip

Elvis Humes

Forty-five-year-old Elvis Humes, an electrician of Bullet Tree Falls Village, has been charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, kept firearm without a gun license and kept ammunition without a gun license.  The battery of charges follow a deadly shooting incident during a hunting trip over the weekend in Cayo District.  Humes was accompanied by John Nolberto and twenty-eight-year-old Jose Manzanero in the El Pilar area of Bullet Tree Falls.  Humes told police that he set out into the nearby bushes when he heard what he believed to be an animal.  Upon his return, he reportedly saw what appeared to be a gleam in the short distance.  Believing that it was a deer, Humes opened fire with a sixteen-gauge shotgun, fatally injuring Manzanero, a Belize Defense Force soldier.  He was transported to the San Ignacio Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
