B.S.I. Files Injunction Against New Sugar Regulations

Mac McLachlan

B.S.I. also confirmed that it has launched an injunction against the latest sugar regulations. Vice-President McLachlan explained that B.S.I. simply cannot do what the legislation is asking of them, because they are not the conveyors of Fairtrade premiums to the associations. Here is how he puts it.

Mac McLachlan, Country Manager/Vice President, A.S.R./B.S.I.

“As you know, we’ve lodged an injunction against that legislation because we are not the conveyor. We don’t market and sell fair trade sugar and we don’t provide the premiums for it. So we’re simply not the conveyor. So what that law was doing was trying to make us do things we can’t do. So of course we had to challenge it. What a shame we have to go through all of this. Again, we’ve put a lot of effort into this country and into this industry in order to put it on a really solid footing. And I think some of the things that are happening there are questionable about whether that’s pushing this thing in the right direction. But you know, the good thing about Belize, there’s a, there’s a court system. Here is a good functioning rule of law and. Uh, we don’t like to have to go that way, but we will use it to defend this business.”
