ComPol Suggests Law to Ban Tinting of Rental Vehicles

Chester Williams

On Wednesday, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams spoke about the murder of Steven Moss on Caesar Ridge Road.  During his interview with the media, the top cop informed that Moss was the victim of a drive-by shooting that took place using a rented vehicle.  To that end, he also told reporters that the Ministry of Home Affairs is considering the passage of legislation to prohibit the tinting of rental vehicles, since they are being used increasingly in the commission of crime.  ComPol Williams was also asked if there was anything that could have been done to prevent Tuesday’s deadly shooting.  Here’s how he responded.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“Hindsight is something that people will always try to use as a means to say things.  You can’t say that because you see a vehicle circling an area or moving through an area it means that they are going to commit a crime.  Yes, the police have been vigilant and have been stopping and searching vehicle, but again they can’t stop and search every and, like I said, the vehicle is a rental vehicle.  I just discussed with the minister yesterday, my minister, is that what we might need to do is to pass a law that when it comes to vehicle rental companies, they cannot tint their vehicles that they are going to rent.  At least the two front glass must not be tinted or the windshield because we are finding now that many of the rental companies have heavily tinted vehicles and when the criminal elements want to go and rent vehicles, they rent those that are heavily tinted.  Again, with the intent to conceal their identity while in those vehicles to go and do nonsense.  So it is something that we will have to look at to see if we can get Cabinet’s approval to disallow rental companies from tinting vehicles that they are renting.”
