Fatal RTA on Boom/Hattieville Road Claims the Life of Motorcyclist

Oscar Mayen Jr.

On Saturday night, a fatal accident on the Boom/Hattieville Road claimed the life of twenty-year-old Oscar Mayen Junior. Mayen Junior was heading to his house in the Tropical Park community on a motorcycle when an SUV travelling in the opposite direction reportedly came onto his lane and they collided head on. The impact flung Mayen Junior into a ditch and he died on the spot. The SUV, driven by Jules Adderly crashed into a lamppost before coming to a stop. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

It is a tough time for the family of twenty-year-old Oscar Mayen Junior because earlier this year, his father also lost his life in a traffic accident and on the same stretch of road. On Saturday night, Mayen Junior was travelling on a motorcycle towards Hattieville, when he collided head-on with an SUV coming from the opposite direction.

“Upon arrival on the Burrell Boom Road, they saw a Toyota Four Runner crashed into a lamppost. Also seen in the area was a motorcycle, damaged. Also seen was the lifeless body of a male person, later identified as Oscar Mayen, twenty years. Oscar Mayen was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Investigation revealed that Mayen was travelling on the motorcycle towards Burrell Boom and the Toyota Four Runner was travelling towards the Philip Goldson Highway when they collided.”

The collision took place on a curve in front of CDS Gas Station on the Boom/Hattieville Road. Omar Martinez, an employee at the butane depot, witnessed the ordeal. He says that the motorcycle burst into flames and he extinguished the fire before assisting Mayen Junior who perished in front of him.

“When it collided, the motorcycle just caught on fire. I just came out and I extinguished the motorcycle and the guy collapsed right there and didn’t even have pulse like a minute, then he just passed.”

Martinez says that he is still traumatized by the incident. It is not the first fatal RTA within proximity of that curve.

Voice of: Omar Martinez

“I kinda traumatise myself. I never did get my good night’s rest last night cause I was thinking all about that. It’s like first time I ever witness somebody took their last breath in front of me.”

Duane Moody

“You think speeding dah wah issue, because this dah wah really steep curve?’

Voice of: Omar Martinez

“Yeah. Yes because like you could see, if he mi di go slow he neva mi wah broke the lamppost.”

The driver of the vehicle is in police custody.
