Legislation to Be Drafted to Ban Sale of Sugary Drinks in Schools

The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health has also partnered to present a paper to Cabinet that will see the sale of sugary drinks banned in schools across the country. Francis Fonseca, the Minister of Education, informed us that legislation is yet to be drafted, and that those regulations will provide for a phasing out of the sale of sugary drinks in school cafeterias. Here is how he explained it.

“We have tabled that paper, a joint paper between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health at Cabinet. So it’s now a question of getting the legislation prepared. But our objective is to ban the sale of sugary drinks on our school campuses. That’s the objective. Obviously, it has to be phased in, because we have to work with our school partners. Many of them have all sorts of agreements and contracts. We have to work with them. But that’s the objective and that will be the basis of the legislation that we will table in the National Assembly to make sure that we put an end once and for all to these sugary drinks in our schools.”
