Streets and Drains in Lake-I are Finally Being Addressed

Ongoing municipal works in Belize City have seen several streets being resurfaced, including the Lake Independence constituency.  For the past few weeks there has been steady work in Lake-I to improve the condition of streets and drains in that community.  According to Area Representative Cordel Hyde, the facelift for Lake-I has been long in the making.

“It’s been a long time coming, really.  We’ve really suffered, you live in this constituency and you know how hard its been for us.  We’ve been in opposition for thirteen years and even though there was a break in between, we’ve been deprived, we’ve been left behind in this constituency and now we’re finally getting what is due to us.  We’re working really, really hard there trying to provide what our people need.  It’s not happening as fast as I would want it to happen because I want to get things done pretty quickly, but it’s happening at pace and I think that people welcome that and people are hopeful about the future and hopeful about how much more transformation we can have.  It’s exciting.  Just a couple months ago, we acquired and surveyed and distributed land papers, titles to, I think, two hundred and forty families in the Gungulung area who had been squatting on these lands for over fifteen years.  It was a really, really wonderful experience because now that these people have their land and we’ve gotten rid of the London bridges, we’ve been able to put in the water, water has been installed right now so these persons no longer have to back water from blocks away or get water that’s not safe.  We’re getting electricity, so now we have street lights, the place is better illuminated and more safe.”
