A tragic scene unfolded Thursday at a Burnaby townhome complex where Mounties say one person is dead after a shooting.

Burnaby RCMP said they received a report that a body was found inside a vehicle on Mulberry Place in the Cariboo Heights Housing Cooperative.

The call came in around noon after reports of shots fired near Cariboo Road and 16th Avenue, Burnaby RCMP said.

Upon finding the body, police said the shooting appears targeted.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation.

Officers told Global News that the victim is a 17-year-old boy.

Friends and family of the victim gathered near the taped off shooting scene, openly sobbing and calling this death tragic and unnecessary.

Talal Sahash lives just a few doors down from where the victim lived and says he’s never seen anything like this in the five years since he moved to the quiet, friendly neighbourhood.

“It’s very safe and to witness such a thing is very disturbing,” Sahash told Global News.

“Lots of kids, most of the houses here have kids.”

Friends and family of the victim tell Global News the victim was in grade 12, set to graduate this year and was studying to become an electrician.

Burnaby RCMP taped off the entrance to the underground parkade.

Police said there are no further risks to the public but have also not confirmed if anyone was arrested.

“Homicide investigators are looking for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam video in the area of the 7400 block of Mulberry Place,” Cpl. Michael Kalanj said.
