Allen, Battin pace Utah past Weber State

Timmy Allen collected 19 points and seven rebounds to lead Utah to a 60-49 victory over Weber State on Saturday in Salt Lake City.

Riley Battin had 10 rebounds for the Utes (8-2), who played without starting point guard Rylan Jones.

The Utes struggled on offense without Jones, shooting just 34.5 percent from the field overall – including 5-of-25 from 3-point range. Weber State (3-6) also forced a dozen turnovers.

Jerrick Harding scored 17 points, Cody John added 15 and Kham Davis chipped in 11 points to lead the Wildcats. Weber State struggled to finish around the rim, missing numerous layups. The Wildcats shot just 33 percent from the field overall.

Both teams combined for 24 missed layups and dunks.

Davis and John each scored a pair of early baskets to help Weber State carve out a 12-6 lead. The Wildcats could not stay on top as the first half progressed once Utah started to get into a better shooting rhythm.

Both Gach capped a 9-1 run with a steal and slam to put the Utes up 15-13. Utah expanded its lead further behind an 11-0 run fueled by 3-pointers from Alfonso Plummer, Gach and Mikael Jantunen. The final one from Jantunen gave the Utes their first double digit lead at 31-20.

Weber State missed seven straight shots and committed three turnovers over a 5 1/2-minute stretch to open the door for Utah’s run.

The Wildcats closed within 31-25 by halftime on back-to-back baskets from Harding and Davis. That’s as close as Weber State would get.

Utah pulled away from the Wildcats in the second half after they had another five minute stretch where they missed seven straight shots. The Utes pushed their lead to 18 points, going up 48-32 on a layup from Branden Carlson with 10:11 left.
