SANTIAGO — There is a new resident at the Santiago Zoo in Chile. A male giraffe calf weighing approximately 100 kilograms (220 pounds) and weighing 2 meters (6.5 feet).

With the baby giraffe open to the public on Wednesday, the zoo has launched a contest to help choose a new giraffe name.

Giraffe was born on June 19th, nearly 15 months pregnant, 5 hours after delivery. The giraffe was born to Johnny, a female giraffe who breastfeeds calves until they can eat branches and leaves. As adults, giraffes can grow up to 6 meters (about 20 feet) and weigh up to 2 tons.

"The birth of a giraffe is always good news. It is the species and variants that face high threat levels," said Andrea Caiozzi, general coordinator of the zoo. "Therefore, it is a way to contribute to the care of the species, its protection, and the education of children and their families."
