Keremeos, British Columbia — The BC Wildfire Service says it is using a combination of tools to control fires in suburban areas in the southern Okanagan region.

Intelligence Officer Mikhail Elsei said a controlled burn was scheduled for Sunday to contain a large blaze that had been burning for more than a week.

The service also assigned crews to install sprinkler systems to protect property in the northeast quadrant of the area.

The approximately 60-square-kilometer wildfire is located approximately 21 kilometers southwest of Penticton.

This has resulted in more than 500 establishments being ordered to evacuate and more than 1,000 establishments ordered to prepare for emergency evacuation.

The service has 381 firefighters, 16 helicopters and 43 heavy equipment to help fight fires.
