Firefighters were called to the bungalow on Castlefrank Road at Glamorgan Drive at 5:24 a.m. by a 911 caller reporting "big flames and smoke" from the single-family home and that people were still inside.
A citizen pulled one person to safety, but a second person is dead after an early morning house fire in Kanata.
Firefighters were called to the bungalow on Castlefrank Road at Glamorgan Drive at 5:24 a.m. by a 911 caller reporting “big flames and smoke” from the single-family home and that people were still inside. The 911 caller then smashed a window and managed to rescue one person, according to the Ottawa Fire Services.
Firefighters were on the scene within four minutes and found the structure engulfed with flames shooting from the roof. They moved into the home to attack the fire from inside, but were forced to retreat a few minutes later when a backdraft of super-heated gases ignited and engulfed the rear of the structure.
A few minutes after that, fire crews were able to safely re-enter and by 5:55 a.m. had brought the fire under control. Fifteen minutes later, after an extensive search, firefighters found the body of one victim.
Firefighters remained at the scene Tuesday while a fire investigator worked to determine the cause of the fire.
