Canada Day celebrations may be cancelled: report

Canadians may be celebrating the country’s 153rd birthday indoors.

While upcoming cultural and sporting events across the country have either been cancelled or postponed to a later date due to COVID-19, Canada Day celebrations may be on the chopping block as well, according to a report.

“The government’s top priority is the health and safety of all Canadians,” the Department of Canadian Heritage said in a statement, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.

“We are monitoring the situation closely. We are working on various contingencies for all events, including Canada Day celebrations based on the advice of public health authorities,” the department said, adding there will be more information in the near future.

A second wave of coronavirus infections is expected around the July 1 holiday, public health officers warn.

“Going into months, we will need to be prepared for another wave potentially,” Dr. Theresa Tam, chief public health officer, earlier told reporters.

“Even if we flatten this wave, we need to keep going so that when the next winter comes along, hopefully we’ve learned an incredible amount in the next several months for us to prepare for any potential resurgence.”

The last time Canada Day festivities were cancelled was in 1976, due to a cut in government spending.
