TORONTO — Canada's Rebecca Marino lost to China's Zheng Qinwen 6-3 6-7(5) 4-6 in the opening round of the National Bank Open on Tuesday.

The Vancouver native entered the tournament after reaching the quarterfinals at the City Her Open, where she lost to Australia's Dahlia Savile.

Marino, who is currently ranked 96th in the top 100 of her WTA rankings for the first time since 2012, started her move early, taking the first set with relative ease.

Marino got off to a good start for Chung in the second set, but she was plagued by her errors unforced in the tiebreak.

The Canadian lost her last three games after leading 4-3 in the final set.

Marino threw her 12 aces to Zheng's 10 of hers to take the break point at 2-2.

Her 19-year-old Zheng, who is ranked 51st in the world, will next face her Ons Jabeur, who is ranked 5th in the world, in the second round.
