A little over a week into the tournament, it’s time to take a look at the favourites for the Golden Ball, the award given out to the best player at the World Cup.

The French superstar has been exactly that so far in the World Cup, tied for the lead in goals with three. It also helps that the defending champions have won their first two games of the tourney. A Frenchman hasn’t won the award since Zinedine Zidane back in 2006.

Lionel Messi +400

The 2014 Golden Ball winner has scored twice in Argentina’s first two games, but his team has just one win to show for it. However, they are still favoured to emerge from Group C which should give Messi more time to create some magic in what will be his final World Cup.

Richarlison +1600

After scoring a pair of goals in Brazil’s opener, including a spectacular, acrobatic finish, the striker was held off the scoresheet against Switzerland. With teammate Neymar dealing with an ankle injury, Richarlison may be more of a focal point for opposing defences moving forward, but as we’ve already seen in this tournament, he has the ability to break through any resistance.
