Local authorities have announced that Georgia has temporarily closed its border with Russia on Monday due to heavy rains in the mountainous areas between the two countries.

"Due to an emergency, all types of customs procedures have been suspended," the Georgia Treasury Department's Revenue Service, which manages border crossings, said in a statement on its website.

"As a result of heavy rain and flooding of the river, part of the road connecting Georgia and Russia was damaged," he added.

There is only one official crossroads between Georgia and Russia on the border of 900 km (559 miles), a mountainous region between the two countries. Social media videos showed that cars are having a hard time navigating flood roads and small landslides.

Georgian officials said that after the weather improved and roads were repaired, the border, the main route for freight between the two countries, would be reopened.
