RIO DE JANEIRO — Uwe Herbert Hahn, a German diplomat in Rio de Janeiro, was arrested Saturday night in connection with the death of his Belgian husband, police said.

Her husband, Walter, and her girlfriend, Biot, fell ill from their Ipanema-area apartment on Friday, according to Hahn.

However, the police arrest him on suspicion of murder as forensic scientists discover bloodstains in the apartment and an autopsy on Biot's body reveals multiple wounds. Television footage showed police taking Khan away in a patrol car.

"The circumstances of the death are clear. Marks of injury on various parts of the body indicate a violent death," said a police investigator. Camila Lorenco told reporters.

The German consulate in Rio did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The couple dated for her 23 years, according to Brazilian news portal G1. Biot said she was 52 years old.
