GO Transit workers 93% voted to strike if no deal is reached

Toronto — Unions representing 2,200 GO transit bus operators, station attendants, plant and fleet maintenance workers, road safety officers, and office professionals voted in favor of going on strike if necessary. 93% of the members who cast said.

In a release issued early Monday, the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1587 accused the state of refusing to negotiate on key issues such as job security, wages and improved work-life balance. It blamed the government agency Metrolinx.

President Rob Cormier said turnout for the strike vote was the highest in local history.

He accused Metrolinx of sabotaging negotiations since they began in his April.

ATU said its member said he was working under an expired contract from 1 June.

No date has been announced for a possible strike.
