Inside the CFL: Former Alouette QB Matt Silz rejuvenated with Hamilton

"I'm grateful for the opportunity that Montreal has given me," said the midfielder, who played there from 2017 to 2021 before signing for Hamilton in the offseason. Shilts said.

Recently there was a revolving door for Alouettes quarterback. Ten years since the retirement of the legendary Anthony his Calvillo

- some have been more successful than others.Take the case of Matthew ShiltsIn his October 11 game against Ottawa last year, an injured Vernon substituted for Adams Jr. and rallied Montreal to a second-half victory I got Silz won his next two games, but was replaced late in the third quarter by Trevor Harris when he struggled against Saskatchewan in his third start.

Silz, who had serious lower and upper body injuries at the time, was placed on the injured reserve list and never played again, much less changed. Although he practiced all week, even with the playoff loss to Hamilton. Instead, former head coach Kari Jones opted to dress up rookie Shay Patterson as Harris' backup. I'm grateful for the opportunity that's given me," Silz told the Montreal Gazette this week. "I respect what [Jones] was doing. He was trying to give us the best chance to win in the moment and made that decision. At the end of the day, you have to perform.

"As a competitor, you want to finish (the game) and finish. But coaches have to make quick decisions and there are no hard feelings.” I signed with Tiger-Cats a few days before I was born. He is believed to be from Winnipeg, BC. Toronto in particular was interested in his services. However, Schilz thought he might get more playing time at Hamilton, who moved from Jeremiah Masoli to start Dane Evans.

The Ticats have occasionally utilized his system two quarterbacks this season. Evans is recovering from a shoulder injury, and Schilz returned from the injury sustained during the game last week by rallying Hamilton to a come-from-behind victory over the Argonauts. He has completed 14 of his 19 passes and is set to start Saturday's match against Als at Molson Stadium.

After suggesting it was just the next game on the schedule and not doing anything personal, Silz became more bombastic, calling Homecoming something special. .

"I spent a lot of time in Montreal, loved the city, interacted with the fans, and became part of his rocker room," he said. "At the same time, it's a business and you have a business to handle." Joining a team that has enjoyed continuity in practice and playing at the same venue, Tim Hortons Field has first-class facilities.

"Every time a change of scenery or a new opportunity presents itself, new perspectives are fresh," said Silz. "Meet new people, get new ideas and see how things are done differently. It's been a great change of scenery. Rejuvenating.

"I have a lot of respect for the Als organization and how they made it work (by running two facilities), but I can't say enough good things about the Ticats organization. We have a great culture here and a great work environment where people come first.”

That last comment says a lot. Silz has always treated himself with class and professionalism, and while he keeps in touch with many former teammates, including Harris and Adams, little has been said about his relationship with his general manager. I haven't spoken. Danny Maciocia is now Al's interim head coach after Jones was sacked on July 6. Jones was then hired by the Tikats as a football operations consultant less than two weeks later, adding yet another intrigue to the story.

Maciosia and Silz could not agree to a new contract... However, there were whispers from many sources suggesting that Als' offer was ridiculously low.

"I respect (Masiosia)," said Silz. "It's business. He made a decision, I made a decision. I'm trying not to let bad blood flow in my heart. I'm looking forward to it, not coming back. I hope I can be where I am." I'm happy, I don't have any hard feelings, I'm excited to keep playing and be a part of this team. When you're stuck with how people have treated you in the past, it's hard to move forward.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 205-pound Silz is unlikely to become a CFL superstar, and may not even develop into a franchise quarterback at this stage of his career. But he has proven more than capable of managing a game, is a decent runner and doesn't usually make impulsive decisions that cost his team. He passed for a season-high 281 yards in the NBA, then threw for 212 yards and scored two touchdowns against Toronto.

"I feel like I still have a lot of football left." He said. "I can be a game-winning guy in this league - given the chance. It would have been special to spend my entire career with one team. Sometimes it's not.

" I'm looking at the windshield, not the rearview mirror."
