Jamal Mashburn Jr. transfers to New Mexico

Minnesota freshman guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. is transferring to New Mexico.

The decision announced Friday reunites Mashburn with new Lobos coach Richard Pitino, who recruited Mashburn to Minnesota and coached him last season.

“Let’s get the pit jumpin!” Mashburn said in his announcement on Instagram, while referencing the school’s famous arena.

Mashburn’s father, Jamal, played for Pitino’s father, Rick, at Kentucky from 1990-93 and was a consensus All-American as a junior before leaving for the NBA. He was the No. 4 overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft and played 11 seasons.

The younger Mashburn averaged 8.2 points in 29 games (eight starts) this season. He shot just 35 percent from the field and his 3-point accuracy rate was 27.6 (24 of 87).

Mashburn entered the transfer portal last month after Minnesota fired Richard Pitino.
