JIVANI: Justin Trudeau doesn’t want to be fair

We are dealing with a politician who appears to feel no shame

Canadians can waste a lot of time worrying about the many hypocrisies of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

We need to start recognizing the truth of who Trudeau is. He is not a fair leader.

A fair prime minister would have a different approach to regulating firearms. Trudeau says he wants to stop violent crimes in Canada by banning guns. But he is targeting law-abiding gun owners, like hunters, while giving more lenient sentences to actual criminals convicted of illegal gun possession.

A fair prime minister would not gaslight Albertans. Trudeau says he does not want to fight with Alberta over Premier Danielle Smith’s Sovereignty Act, but it’s his own policies that have hurt Alberta’s natural resource development. The Sovereignty Act is a direct response to what Trudeau has done to Albertans and their economy. It’s Trudeau who started the fight, not Smith.

A fair prime minister would not pick and choose when science matters. Trudeau accuses the Conservative Party of being “unscientific” for opposing so-called “safe supply” drugs. Meanwhile, the Trudeau government is going against the advice of “medical experts” and expanding euthanasia services to people suffering from mental illness.

Canadians have tried to appeal to Trudeau’s better nature for years, thinking maybe if we highlight his inconsistencies, he’ll realize how biased he is. Perhaps it’s just a matter of pointing out where he has strayed from liberal principles.

But we are dealing with a politician who appears to feel no shame.

This week, Trudeau finally commented on the protest movements in China that are pushing back against the Chinese Communist Party’s continued COVID lockdowns. “Everyone in China should be allowed to express themselves, should be allowed to share their perspectives and indeed protest,” Trudeau stated. “We’re going to continue to ensure that China knows we’ll stand up for human rights, we’ll stand with people who are expressing themselves.”

It’s an odd statement coming from the same guy who testified last week before the Public Order Emergency Commission and attempted to justify his own government’s crackdown on protests in Ottawa. Trudeau made clear that he still believes he was right to invoke the Emergencies Act to stop Canadians from protesting against his COVID-19 policies, but now claims to be supportive when Chinese protesters object to their government’s policies.

The National Post’s Tristin Hopper has argued that Trudeau’s position isn’t hypocritical because of important differences between the Chinese and Canadian political systems. However, the Trudeau Liberals don’t have to be as bad as the Chinese Communist Party for Canadians to be reasonably frustrated by our government.

  3. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau continues to parse his words carefully to avoid telling Canadians the truth about alleged foreign interference in our elections, writes columnist Brian Lilley.

Trudeau used the language of “human rights” to talk about protesting in China, but refuses to acknowledge the human rights that his government violated in Canada. Trudeau’s use of the Emergencies Act was so extreme that it led to a single mom earning minimum wage in British Columbia having her bank account frozen because she donated $50 to the trucker convoy.

If Trudeau can stand before the media with a straight face and pretend he is a champion of civil liberties, then it’s obvious his hypocrisy knows no limits. Canadians deserve to have a fair prime minister, but Trudeau doesn’t want to be one.
