Decided to side with Enbridge in Michigan's latest bid to close pipeline

A Michigan judge ruled in favor of Enbridge Inc. in a long-running dispute with the state over the Route 5 cross-border pipeline.

In Thursday's ruling, Judge Janet Neff said that the case belongs to federal court. This is a blow to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer's attempt to shut down the pipeline.

It is the second time in his nine months that Neff has sided with Enbridge on a jurisdiction issue.

Whitmer said he has been trying to shut down Line 5 since November 2020, fearing a spill in the Strait of Mackinac between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas where the pipeline crosses the Great Lakes. .

Proponents, including the Canadian federal government, have called Line 5 an essential and essential source of energy for Ontario, Quebec, and several Midwestern provinces.

Environmental activists fear that an anchor attack or technical failure could wreak havoc in one of the region's most important watersheds.
