Orlando Magic chose Duke Forward Paolo Bankero in the first overall pick of the NBA Draft on Thursday night in New York.
As a freshman to Duke last season, the 6'10 Banchero averaged 17.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. He also contributed to the defense with 41 steals and 36 block shots.
Banchero was ranked 4th overall as a Duke player. Others include Elton Brand (1999 Chicago Bulls), Kyrie Irving (2011, Cleveland Cavaliers), and Zion Williamson (2019, New Orleans Pelicans).
"Honestly, I can't believe what happened," Banchero told ABC. "I didn't expect this to happen. I wanted to join the NBA. I didn't know I would (No. 1). This is unbelievable and I can't talk about it now. "
This is Magic's fourth overall NBA Draft selection. Orlando drafted Shaquille O'Neal in 1992, Chris Webber (traded to the Golden State Warriors) in 1993, and Dwight Howard in 2004.
Magic hit the NBA's second worst record of 22-60 last season. .. Orlando has won the right to be the first to choose in the draft draw.
