Montreal police handed out record 583 curfew tickets last week

That includes the 107 tickets handed out Sunday night when an anti-curfew protest in Old Montreal became destructive.

Montreal police officers last week handed out 538 tickets to people allegedly violating Quebec’s nightly curfew, the department said Monday.

That’s the most curfew tickets handed out in a week since the measure was put in place Jan. 9.

In addition to curfew tickets, Montreal police last week gave out 467 tickets related to violations of other pandemic health directives.

The police force received a total of 1,547 pandemic-related calls last week, a high for 2021.

The latest tally includes tickets issued on April 11, when an anti-curfew rally turned destructive in Old Montreal. Police say they handed out 107 health violation tickets during the protest.

That was the night that the curfew in Montreal and Laval went back to 8 p.m.

For its part, the Sûreté du Québec reported handing out 763 tickets for violations of public-health orders between April 6 and 11. They included 316 for alleged curfew violations – of which 18 were given out on highways in the greater Montreal area.
