Montreal's Nouveau Monde Theater goes up in flames

We could see flames coming from part of the building under renovation.

On Thursday morning, firefighters extinguished a fire at the Theater Nouveau Monde in downtown Montreal.

It was not clear if anyone was injured or struck by smoke or flames from the fire near the corner of Ste. Catherine St W. and St Irvine St

The cause of the fire was not known Thursday morning. Flames could be seen coming from part of the building under renovation.

The Montreal Police have set up a massive security perimeter, including closing Boulevard Rene Les Lesques. West, between St. Urbain and Jeanne Mance Sts.

Montreal's police headquarters are dozens of meters away from the fire, as are Complexe Desjardins and Place des Arts.

Shortly after 8:00 am, the fire did not appear to be spreading, but there was a lot of smoke. The extent of the damage to the old building is not yet known.

The theater, which has existed since 1951, occupies a building built in 1912.
