Police in Nanaimo, British Columbia, are investigating after a body was found in a house on the south end that was destroyed in a fire.

Emergency authorities were notified of the fire around 5 p.m., according to a Nanaimo RCMP statement. Thursday, at my home on Athletic Street.

The Nanaimo City fire brigade was the first to the scene, and black smoke rose from the building.

It took firefighters about 40 minutes to put out the fire. After the fire was extinguished, a search of the building was conducted and the body of an adult male was found.

The RCMP deemed the death suspicious and turned the investigation over to the military's Major Crimes Unit.

No other details have been released. Anyone with information is asked to call the police.
