New suspect in death of woman in Vaughan house fire

Police in York Region have charged a new suspect with first-degree murder in the death of a woman in a house fire in Vaughan last week.

York Regional Police responded last Friday around 7:45 p.m. to the Parktree Dr.-Lucena Cresc. area and upon arrival found an unresponsive female victim inside the residence.

The victim, identified as Naheed Askaryar, 64, of Vaughan, was taken to hospital, where she died.

A subsequent autopsy determined the cause of her death was stab wounds.

On Tuesday, police said they arrested and charged a 71-year-old man with first-degree murder and arson endangering life. However, due to “new information from the community, investigators uncovered additional evidence,” leading to the arrest of Ahmad Shekeb Askarzada, 43.
