WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND (AP) — A New Zealand family who bought abandoned goods from a storage unit took their purchases home and found a dead body. I found Of her two children hidden in two suitcases, police said Thursday.

The children were between her five and her ten years old, several years had passed since their death, and the suitcase had been in his possession for at least three or four years, he said. Detective Tofilaufa Amanuiavaaerua said.

He said the investigation was at an early stage but would be rigorous. "This includes when, where and how to establish," Vaaelua told journalists in Auckland.

The family bought personal effects and household items at his online auction and brought them home last week. Vaaelua stressed that they had nothing to do with death and was understandably heartbroken by their findings.

Police first set up a crime scene at their Oakland home last week to launch a murder investigation, but refused to go into details of the case until Thursday.

Vaaelua said The children's identification process is ongoing, but they said they have relatives living in New Zealand.

He also said police had contacted Interpol and overseas police agencies. This indicates that police may believe the suspect is currently living abroad.

"The investigative team has no idea who is responsible for the deaths of these children." We are working hard to hold accountable," he said.

He said it was a difficult case for the investigative team.

"Even after years of serving and investigating such a horrific incident, it is no easy task," he said. "I am the parent of a young child myself. But we have work to do."
