Newfoundland man arrested after standoff with police in cemetery

ST. JOHN’S, N.L.—A 54-year-old Newfoundland man was arrested this morning after a brief police standoff in a United Church cemetery.

The RCMP says a report came in at 8 a.m. about a man who allegedly damaged a vehicle with a weapon and left the scene on foot.

The lone man was found by police in the cemetery, reportedly still in possession of the unspecified weapon.

People were asked to stay away from the area as police set up a perimeter.

The force says the local man was taken to the hospital after officers used pepper spray to take him into custody.

He now faces charges for possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, mischief for damaging property and breaching a probation order.
