Officials reveal plans to stabilize Ontario's healthcare system

The Ontario government is set to announce plans on Thursday to stabilize the health care system as hospitals across the province grapple with continued staffing shortages.

Health Minister Sylvia Jones will make the announcement at 9:00 a.m. along with Long-term Care Minister Paul Her Calandra and Ontario Health President and CEO Matthew Anderson.

At the Ontario Municipal Association meeting in Ottawa on Wednesday, Jones provided vague details about what these next steps will entail.

Government The goal is to "provide the best possible care to our patients and residents while ensuring we have the resources and support to sustain our state and economy," she said.

"After decades of inaction, we can no longer maintain and support a status quo that fails to meet the current challenges facing this sector," she told the audience. "Instead, guided by the best evidence and the success of other jurisdictions, governments will take bold action that puts patients and their health above all else."

Ontario hospitals were closed this summer with reduced hours due to severe staffing shortages.
