Maria Kartasheva, a representative of the Russian Canadian Democratic Alliance, was part of an Ottawa group in the Market Saturday seeking volunteers to sign letters to support political prisoners in Russian jails.
In particular, the letters were intended for prisoners who had been jailed for speaking out against the war with Ukraine.
A similar events was held in major Canadian cities.
“Many people who are detained in Russian prisons are human rights activists, journalists, politicians, and artists, and these letters are their lifeline,” the group explains on its home page.
Other letter campaigns are scheduled for Winnipeg and Montreal over the weekend.
