San Francisco (AP) — A San Francisco couple who have parked their cars in a paved area in front of their house for decades is banned from parking unless they are fined heavily.

KGO-TV reported on Monday that city officials sent a letter to Judy and Ed Crane telling them that they would not be able to park on the pavement of their property in the hills for 36 years. Along with the letter, he was informed of a fine of $ 1,542 and a threat of a $ 250 per day fee to keep parking on their property.

"It's amazing when we suddenly say we can't use what we can use for years," Ed Craine said.

City Planning Officer Dan Cider said decades ago city ordinances to maintain neighborhood aesthetics banned residents from collecting cars in their yard. I said there is. Authorities investigated the issue in Craines' property after receiving an anonymous complaint.

"I recognize that real estate owners are dissatisfied. I think they will feel the same in their situation," Cider said.

Craines tried to find a photo showing that the space had been used for parking for a long time. Blurred aerial photographs of the 1930s were not clear enough for planners, and the 34-year-old photograph provided by the couple was considered recent.

The city was fined after the couple agreed to stop parking on the sidewalk. If Craines builds a paved property or garage cover, authorities have stated that parking can be resumed on it in accordance with city regulations.
