The search in the Bahamas for a teenage baseball player from Louisiana was called off over the weekend after he allegedly jumped from a cruise ship last week on a dare.

The search for Cameron Robbins, 18, was suspended on Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard said, after the Baton Rouge, La., student went overboard during a sunset cruise on May 24 near Athol Island, northeast of Nassau. Robbins was celebrating his graduation with fellow classmates after completing his studies days earlier at University Lab School in Baton Rouge, WBRZ reported.

“We were informed by the (Royal Bahamas Defence Force) this (Friday) evening that they were suspending the active search efforts pending further developments and were not requesting further coast guard assistance after notifying the Robbins family,” Lt.-Cmdr. Matthew Spado, coast guard liaison officer to the Bahamas, said in a news release. “We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins’ family and friends.”

Footage surfaced on Twitter showing a man, purported to be Robbins, in the water after allegedly jumping from the Blackbeard’s Revenge cruise ship.

“This f****** kid jumped off,” a person yells in the video as panic ensues on the deck of the ship.

“Grab the buoy … grab the buoy,” others yell to the man, who treads water nearby without a life-jacket.

Robbins and other students from his school, who were staying at Atlantis Paradise Island, had been in the Bahamas for four hours before going on the cruise, a parent told WAFB.

“Words fall short of expressing the worry our entire school community is feeling,” University Lab School director Kevin George said of Robbins. “Extra counsellors will be available on campus to speak with students and faculty who are struggling to process this news. Our thoughts are with the Robbins family and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts as well.”
