Special weather statement: Record-setting rain possible in many areas

After record heat and very dry conditions that worried some farmers, both lower temperatures and rain – pretty much all the rain – are on their way.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for localized and heavy rainfall.

The “remnants” of tropical storm Fay, which made landfall Friday evening in New Jersey and is headed north and east, are expected to dump between 50 and 70 mm of rain here on Saturday, and as much as 95mm by Sunday morning. The storm is forecast to be closest to Ottawa shortly after noon on Saturday, when it is projected to pass between Montreal and Sherbrooke.

Ottawa’s record for most rain on July 11 is 39.4 mm and was set in 2003. Data goes back to 1939.

Make sure your gutters, ditches and drains are all clear.

At 25 C, Saturday’s high won’t be breaking any records. With so much moisture still in the air, however, the humidex will still be making it feel closer to 35.

Tonight’s low will be near 19 C.

The bulk of the storm is supposed to hit Saturday but expect some precipitation – and possibly a thunderstorm – until about noon on Sunday. The high will be 24 C and the humidex near 31.

Sunday night should be partly cloudy with a low of 14 C.

Average normals for this time of the year are highs of 27 C and lows of 16 C.

There’s a 40 per cent chance of rain both day and night on Monday. The high be 25 C with a low near 16 C.

The chance of rain goes up to 60 per cent during the day on Tuesday with the high staying stable at 25 C.

There’s a 40 per cent chance of showers Tuesday night. The low should be about 17 C.

Wednesday may be the only really sunny day of the week. The high will be 28 C.

Wednesday night will see some cloudy periods and a low of 18 C.

Rain returns on Thursday and Friday with highs of 27 C and 29 C, respectively.

Stay cool and stay dry. Happy Saturday!
