World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev beat Canada's Denis Shapovalov 7-5, 7-5 on Thursday to advance to the Cincinnati quarterfinals before defending his US Open title.
Russia's Medvedev suffered an uncomfortable early exit from this month's Canadian Masters, but tune-up for his final major of the year overcame early mistakes in his tournament and traded breaks with Shapovalov. and then broke again in the 11th game.
A frustrated Shapovalov was cautioned for banging 2019 tournament winner Medvedev with his racket as he finished the first set.
Medvedev is first in the second set. The break didn't break because he saved his points.
"The match was pretty close. I felt the level was great," Medvedev said. "My goal was to stay there for every point possible."
He will face Taylor his Fritz in the next round. The Indian Wells winner came back from the set downs, centering on his court to beat Russia's Andrei Rublev 6-7 (4) 6-2 7-5.
Rublev's game took a turn for the worse when Fritz picked himself up. The American broke in the third and fifth games of the second set, unleashing his 12 winners, twice as many as his opponent.
Fritz saved his three breaks his points in a tense sixth game before converting his own break his points in the 11th game.
Greece's Stephanos Tsitsipas beat Diego Schwartzman in just over 90 minutes as he beat him 6-3 6-3 and Argentina committed his nine double faults.
