World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev beat Canada's Denis Shapovalov 7-5, 7-5 on Thursday to advance to the Cincinnati quarterfinals before defending his US Open title.

Russia's Medvedev suffered an uncomfortable early exit from this month's Canadian Masters, but tune-up for his final major of the year overcame early mistakes in his tournament and traded breaks with Shapovalov. and then broke again in the 11th game.
