Vladimir Mau, a leading Russian economist, was charged with "especially large" fraud, the Russian Interior Ministry said Thursday.

He said he was accused as part of a larger case involving another top scholar and a former Deputy Minister of Education.

Mau, 62, is an economic liberal and has close ties to leading policy makers. He was a companion to the late Yegor Guider, who implemented economic reforms of "shock therapy" in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

State news agency Tas said he was detained, but Interfax said investigators were asking him to be arrested at home. (Report by Reuters)
