Carleton University and the union representing teaching assistants and contract instructors returned to the bargaining table early Saturday, five days after about 3,000 members began strike action.

“Heading back to the table tomorrow, bright and early!” Noreen Cauley-Le Fevre, president of CUPE Local 4600 tweeted Friday evening.

The union has said members are looking for wage increases that will help them catch up to inflation and get them closer to rates paid for similar work at uOttawa, across the city, among other things.

They two sides are reportedly meeting with a mediator.

They have been negotiating since last August.

The strike action, with pickets at the entrances to the university, began last Monday just as the university’s winter semester is winding down.

Carleton has said it will update the situation as it evolves.
